May 12, 2006, Newsletter Issue #58: Think From Your Goals

Tip of the Week

Every book on success talks about the importance of goals. But almost none of them talk about how to think about your goals. Decades ago, a success philosopher names Neville gave us the secret: Don’t think of your goals, think from your goals. How important is it to do this? In his book, Golf my way, Jack Nicklaus reveled how he used this technique to become one of the greatest golfers of all time. Before each shot, he created a mental movie of the entire golf shot in his head:

“I never hit a shot, even in practice, without having a very sharp, in focus picture of it in my head. It’s like a color movie. First, I “see” the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes and I “see” the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and the shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there’s a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kid of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.
