Should I Outsource my Human Resources?

Manage Your Best Resource: People

As a business owner, you may find it difficult to keep on top of your human resource management. If your business is small, you probably don't need to hire a full time human resource manager to keep up with hiring, payroll and benefits. Outsourcing the work is a good option for many businesses.

To decide whether small business human resources outsourcing is right for your business, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I have the small business human resources expertise already in my staff? If you have a receptionist who has experience in benefits and an assistant who knows how to do payroll, you may be able to divide the work among several employees rather than outsourcing.
  • Is human resources causing an administrative burden on my staff? Perhaps you've tried dividing up the human resources work, only to find that it's putting unnecessary strain on your staff. This would be a good time for outsourcing the work.
  • Are we currently managing organizational change well? Sometimes it takes an outside expert to really see how organizational changes can disrupt or otherwise affect the entire company.
  • Can we afford to outsource? Depending on the status of your company, you may not be able to afford what a human resource firm will charge to manage your benefits, hiring and payroll. Consider outsourcing just one or two of these services to save money.
